Euromemorandum 2006 - European Economists for an Alternative Economic Policy in Europe

With this year's Memorandum, the Group of the European Economists for an Alternative Economic Policy in Europe (Euromemorandum Group) signals its opposition to the accelerating neoliberal transformation of the European Union and to what this transformation entails: unemployment, poverty, growing inequality, environmental degradation, as well as increasing financial crises and tensions.

As it has been doing every year since its inception in the mid-1990s, the Euromemorandum presents in detail the tendencies that were documented in the economic and social life of the EU member states during 2006. Euromemorandum 2006 is critical towards the prevailing policy in the EU on the basis of the policy's negative effects and erroneous conceptual basis, and provides a set of alternative proposals for a sustainable, democratic and social Europe.

Several economists from around Europe have signed in support of the Euromemorandum 2006, underlining the fact that the 'one-way street' of neoliberalism is not universally accepted. On the contrary, neoliberalism is based on theoretical and political choices that serve particular class interests, rather than society as a whole.
